An Introduction to Water Recreation & the Marine Industry
On-The-Water Skills (OTWS) - is a 7-week introductory course from All Hands Boatworks open to teens and young adults ( 14-to-24-years old) to learn about water access, recreation, jobs, and careers around Milwaukee harbors and waterways and beyond. The program combines hands-on skills and discussions about boating etiquette and professionalism with field trips and on-the-water experiences. Participants are introduced to small boat recreation and water-related opportunities through sessions on water safety, water survival training, experience paddling and rowing small boats, use of power boats, and an introduction to sailing. The program encourages completion of a 5-hour online course to get a Boater Operator License which the state of Wisconsin requires for anyone born after 1988 to legally operate a Motorboat or Personal Water Craft (Jet Ski). In addition, participants will learn about potential summer and entry-level jobs, which can turn into well-paying maritime careers. Participant get to keep a life jacket and are eligible for a $150 stipend upon successful completion of the program.
